Efficient and Accurate LiDAR Mapping
in a Rugged Open-Pit Mine in Yunnan, China
In a recent geological mapping and monitoring project in a large open-pit mining site in Yunnan Province, China, the Geosun GS-260X UAV LiDAR system was deployed to tackle one of the most challenging environments for aerial surveying.
The mining site is surrounded by steep slopes, fragmented terrain, loose materials, and constant dust interference from ongoing excavation. Traditional ground-based methods were difficult, time-consuming, and risky. Moreover, GNSS signal quality was unstable due to rock interference and terrain shielding.
Despite these difficulties, the GS-260X system, equipped with a high-performance Hesai XT32 laser sensor and Geosun’s high-precision GNSS/INS POS system, delivered outstanding results:
Key Achievements:
Stable flight performance over high-relief and unstable terrain, with real-time terrain-following capabilities
Clear and smooth Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and high-density point clouds for slope analysis, ridge detection, and volume measurement
Sharp delineation between different surface materials, including ore bodies, tailings, and exposed bedrock
Accurate 3D modeling of safety zones, haul roads, and pit walls for mine planning and monitoring
Minimal need for rework, saving time and significantly improving worker safety
Even in areas with limited GNSS signals and frequent airborne dust, the GS-260X maintained consistent data quality and coverage, proving its reliability in harsh industrial environments.
Model Used: Geosun GS-260X
Application Field: Mining Survey & Slope Monitoring
Project Location: Open-Pit Mine, Yunnan Province, China
Flight Conditions: Elevation difference: 300+ m; Dusty, fragmented terrain; Intermittent GNSS signals
With its long-range scanning ability, fine vertical resolution, and penetration power, the GS-260X is becoming a preferred solution for safe, efficient, and data-rich mine site digitization in Southwest China.
